Refugees and those seeking asylum from oppressive regimes are entitled to work in the U.S., and it's important that business owners who hire these individuals know the proper employment verification procedures.

As explained by the Citizenship and Immigration Services Department, an asylee or refugee should be marked on form I-9 as "an alien authorized to work." Then, enter the Admission Number of their Form I-94 Arrival/Departure Record or Alien Registration Number.

For refugees, the I-94 is an acceptable List A document guaranteeing the right to work for 90 days. After that, an Employment Authorization Document, Form I-766, or a Social Security Card and List B document must be furnished.

Asylees, meanwhile, receive an I-94 and EAD once they earn their protected status, and can work indefinitely in America with these items and a List B document.
