The hiring process is getting smarter. At least, that's what U.S. Customs and Immigration Services is going for. The agency proposed a new Form I-9 in late 2015. Now, the revised I-9 is in what could be its final comment period. For now, employers should use the same I-9s they've been using. Even though they're expired, they're acceptable until the "smart" I-9 is released.

So what makes this new I-9 so smart? Well, it's supposed to help cut down on errors.

For example, it verifies whether the correct information was entered. It also offers instructions for certain fields. And the new I-9 can be recovered with a QR code.

Employers can also make sure their I-9s are error-free with I-9 Advantage. This software, along with I-9 Medic and I-9 Remote, helps employers make sure their I-9s are compliant.

And that's just the smart thing to do.
