2015 brings massive Form I-9 penalties for employers [Video]
What did a series of Form I-9 mistakes look like in 2015? A settlement with the government and the loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars. This year, the trend of large fines for employers that did not complete the Form I-9 correctly or failed to comply with employment eligibility regulations continued.
In fact, the largest penalty to date for Form I-9 issues was handed down to Hartmann Studios in 2015. The company was hit with a $605,250 fine for its Form I-9 violations.
Another company, Employer Solutions Staffing Group II LLC was also handed a huge fine. The professional employer organization was slammed with a fine of just over $227,251.
Document discrimination related to Form I-9 practices during the hiring process also earned some large penalties. McDonald's owes $355,000 for discriminating against green card-holders.
There's little reason to believe the massive fines will slow down in 2016.
Employers should start organizing a plan to avoid similar repercussions in the new year and can look to solutions, such as those offered by I-9 Advantage, to ensure their Form I-9 and E-Verify practices are compliant.
